According to the definition given in the ISO 1720 standard, these third-party inspection companies fall in category A of inspection companies. According to this standard, there are two more inspection companies which are not independent.

Category B inspection companies are a large-scale inspection companies which are involved in the installation, procurement,construction etc. Moreover, their inspection department offers inspection services to its own company.

Normally a category B inspection company is a department of quality control in some engineering company. This department provides assistance to companies in purchasing projects and procurement and makes an inspection of products and services purchased by their own company.

For example, an EPC company has a contract signed with an oil company for the construction, design, and procurement of desalting plant. Then the quality control exam of this EPC company will conduct the inspection of the equipments and materials which have been ordered by the EPC contractor for desalting plant. So, this the situation where we need the category B inspection company.

Moreover, this inspection will not be enough for the end-user or the oil company in this example. Then the oil company will have to hire category A inspection company to conduct the inspection of equipment and materials of the EPC company.

All kinds of projects have different procedures for handling different requirements in their procurement projects. In some cases,the procured equipment is inspected by both categories A and category B. Plus,it is sometimes inspected by a third-party inspection company as well.  

According to the definition mentioned in the ISO 1720 standard, there is another category for inspection organizations called Category C. The Category C inspection organization do not have much to offer.Category C companies are an inspection department who are offering services to its own projects and procurement as well as other manufacturing companies.Like similar to Category B companies these companies also cannot be independent.

A lot of scope of work is present in the category A inspection companies or third-party inspection companies. One of them is referred to as third-party quality inspection which is referred to as quality work. In this category, the inspection company checks and make sure the quality of the product shipment is as same as the required specifications.

Most of the scope of work is defined by purchasers and buyers. However, some of them even need pre-shipment inspection and some other may make it more compulsory for third-party inspection companies to conduct important tests and inspections like identification of material, review of certificates, painting inspection, packaging and marking inspection, loading inspection, performance testing, and much more.
